Participating in The Sketchbook Project 2015

My Sketchbook has started its journey across the Atlantic to Brooklyn Art Library. I have called it Inside Out

“Using the covers of the sketchbook to hide behind, I have drawn a series of intensely personal self portraits. No bells and whistles, just me, a mirror and a 2B pencil. All the portraits were drawn within a 2 week period in March 2015. To me a sketchbook is a safe place where I can just be myself, and talk to myself through drawings and words. I never usually share them with anyone else. Looking back through old sketchbooks I love the freedom, originality and vitality of the drawings and strive to capture those qualities in my painting practice.”

The Sketchbook Project is a crowd-sourced library of over 30,000 sketchbooks submitted by people of all ages and backgrounds from more than 135 countries. Sketchbooks are archived in the permanent collection at Brooklyn Art Library with inclusion in the 2015 Exhibition Tour when sketchbooks are taken out on tour in a purpose built vehicle. My sketchbook is also going to be digitised so will be available to view 24/7 worldwide.

BBC The One Show films are aired!

Dominic Wright copy DSCN1700 copy16 minutes, 34 seconds into the programme on Tuesday 31st of March it was good to finally see the film shot last August in St Davids, Pembrokeshire when eleven artists, ranging from professionals to students to amateurs spent a day drawing as many portraits as we could. This was in support of Grahame Hurd-Wood who is working on a project to paint every resident in the UK’s smallest city – the film featuring his project was shown on the previous day.

Am pleased that some good shots of both myself and my chalk pastel portraits were included. You can see a brief glimpse of me working on my portrait of Dominic (above) in the film.

Catch the programme on iplayer for 28 days from date of transmission.

The second film shows myself and eleven other artists rising to the challenge of drawing as many portraits as we could in one day. This took place on a lovely sunny day at The Goat Street Gallery, which overlooks St Davids Cathedral, on the 7th of August 2014.

Young Musician of Dyfed is a competition for instrumentalists under the age of 19 years that offers all competitors an individual masterclass with some of the country’s leading players. I enjoyed drawing during the masterclasses where Steve Bingham, international violinist and Andrew Wilson-Dickson, composer and keyboard player, gave interesting insights into improving their understanding and performance skills. The three musicians shown above were amongst those selected for the final on Saturday the 25th April at Rhosygilwen. www.ymmd.org.uk

“Limitless Reverberation” – Mugenkyo Taiko Drumming Concert

concertina of mug miyuki way of drum zoom in mugA great concert at Theatr Mwldan in Cardigan a few nights ago-’The Way of the Drum’ showed the amazing range of Mugenkyo’s skills led by founding members Neil Mackie and Miyuki Williams. As ever, my itchy fingers wouldn’t sit still and I filled a concertina sketchbook with drawings made during the performance. Looking forward to developing these into finished paintings in my studio.
